Sugar Cane is a collective of diverse musicians, based in the Tampa Bay region, rooted firmly
in the traditions of jazz, funk, and Afro-Caribbean music. All throughout the Caribbean and
Latin America perhaps no other crop symbolized the blood, toil, and resilience of the African
slave, the indigenous peoples, and the migrant worker more than sugar cane (or caña in
Spanish). Like the rum distilled from the sweet molasses, the music of this region is the
powerful silver lining in an otherwise violent and painful history. United by a deep sense of
groove, this adventurous ensemble honors an ancestral legacy of music and culture while
adapting these traditions for a new generation of conscious listeners.
