Join the Wordier Than Thou crew for an Adult Spelling Bee to benefit The Literary Council of St. Petersburg! Why should kids get all the fun? Ten adult teams (comprised of 2-4 people each) will battle it out to determine the best spellers in the area during this fundraiser for The Literacy Council of St. Petersburg. The competition consists of 11 rounds of 10 words. The Stand-Up Librarian Meredith Myers will host the event. This evening will also include snacks, music and a raffle featuring items from local businesses and authors.

“The Literacy Council of St. Petersburg is excited to partner with Wordier Than Thou, another local, like-minded organization that focuses on the power of the written word,” said Amy Durand, vice president of the Literacy Council’s Board of Directors.“This spelling bee is the first of what will become an annual event, and we expect it to be a lot of fun!”

To compete, teams must have two to four members. Theatricality, team names and costumes are encouraged. Registration is $75 per team. To register, visit, or send a check for $75 made out to The Literacy Council of St. Petersburg, 1717 54th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, 33714-2038.

During each round, each team competing will spell five words. At the end of each round, the team with the lowest number of points will be eliminated. Words spelled correctly earn a team three points. Teams will lose one point for each word spelled incorrectly.

Teams can also collect donations for the Literacy Council ahead of the event. The team that collects the most donations will get one free pass into the next round. The winning team will receive a prize.

The Stand-Up Librarian Meredith Myers, a literary comedian and performer, will host the event.

This evening will also include snacks, music, and an opportunity drawing featuring items from local businesses, artists, and authors. Raffle items are currently being sought and will be collected through the day of the event.

Tickets to watch the spelling bee are $7 per person in advance and $10 at the door.
