Pizazz on Broadway: A Benefit

Local Kids with Pizazz Put on Show to Make their Broadway Dreams Come True

Pizazz, the Youth Song and Dance Troupe of the St. Petersburg Little Theatre, will perform on June 26 to raise funds for a New York trip with support from Caberfeidh Productions.

It's like a 1930's movie script in 21st Century style – plucky St. Petersburg kids raise money for a trip to Broadway by putting on a show in a barn.  Pizazz, the youth song and dance troupe of the St. Petersburg Little Theatre (SPLT), will perform on Friday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m. at The Studio@620, 620 First Avenue South, in St. Petersburg.

Our heroes, eighteen kids, ages 10-15, have been meeting on Saturdays since last August to study dance, music and acting.  The highlight of the year is a trip to New York planned for this August -- plans made before the economy took a nose-dive.

The trip is a learning opportunity.  Every day will start with a workshop taught by a Broadway director, musical director, or choreographer.  In the afternoon, actors will lead site-seeing tours.  In the evening, the kids from Pizazz will be in the audience for some great Broadway shows.  If only they can raise the money …

Enter the kindly benefactors – Dale and Sara Jean Gross of Caberfeidh Productions, LLC.  Caberfeidh Productions brings Celtic, bluegrass, and acoustic music acts to Tampa Bay.  Dale and Sara Jean are members of both the St. Petersburg Little Theatre and The Studio@620.  They had an idea.  They decided to help Pizazz get their barn.

The kids from Pizazz have it better than Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney's gang.  For Pizazz, the "barn" is the culturally-rich Studio@620, dubbed St. Petersburg's "center for cool" by The St. Petersburg Times.  Typically, The Studio@620 hosts outstanding art exhibits, cutting-edge music, or innovative theatrical performances – not kids performing show tunes.  The Studio@620's broader mission, however, is to promote education and collaboration in the community through the arts, so they joined the cast.

Pizazz will perform group and solo numbers from a variety of Broadway musicals, including “Hairspray,” “Barnum,” “A Chorus Line,” “Oliver,” “Annie,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “High School Musical,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Annie Get Your Gun.”

The kids have the barn.  They have been practicing all year.  Now all they need is to fill the seats.

Cue the audience.  Pizazz will perform at The Studio@620 on Friday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30.  Donations will be accepted at the door – the suggested minimum donation is $10.00.  All donations will go to the St. Petersburg Little Theatre, the oldest continuously operating community theater in Florida, in support of Pizazz's trip to New York.
