CUBAN BREAD A play in 15 scenes set in 1930's Ybor City.

In CUBAN BREAD, former anarchist firebrand Alfonso Rivera is hired by
cigar workers as a Lector to read politics, news and "Don Quixote" while
they work. Older now and weary of politics, he is forced to confront his
personal demons and his romantic past at a crucial moment in 1930s Cuban
American history. Though he has grown weary of her utopian rhetoric, he
cannot resist the charms of his former mistress, the younger labor
organizer, Rosa Ramirez. Alfonso passes on his wisdom to Rosa's ward,
Luis, through baseball, Cervantes, and a genial sense of humor. The
Tampa establishment forces Rivera to choose between deep South ignorance
and hard line organizers in the city's Cuban enclave, Ybor City. Amidst
the excitement of a musical benefit performance, Rivera's choice may
have tragic consequences for those closest to him.
Much of the action in CUBAN BREAD is set in a context of music and fantasy. The story is re-told through he memory of Rosa's niece, Maria Antonia. The play was inspired byincidents which occurred in 1931-32. Though written as an entertaining
fiction, research for CUBAN BREAD included interviews, local newspaper
accounts, editorials and trial transcripts. The play premiered at the USF Arte 2005 Festival.

Mrs Rawling's Mess, a stage play in two acts adapted for the Radio Theatre Project by Greg Johnson, Directed by Bob Devin Jones
The events depicted in Mrs. Rawlings’ Mess are based on a 1942 civil lawsuit forinvasion of privacy filed by Zelma Cason against Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling. Miss Cason objected to her characterization inRawlings’ nonfiction work Cross Creek, a portrait of her rural community in Florida.The legal wrangling between these two Florida pioneers spanned 6 years and reached its height in a 1946 courtroom battle now called the Cross Creek Trial.
Suggested donation $10 and $5 for Students.
Performance will be signed for the hearing impaired.
