Tired of being addicted to Big Oil? There’s good news: Back in 2006, the electric vehicles (EVs) market was effectively dead, but today EVs are making a comeback across America! Tampa Bay is now one of the best places in the whole country to own an EV, with over 100 public charging stations now charging EV’s. While EV owners can't stop raving about the newest models, Big Oil and its allies have been trying to spread ridiculous stories smearing EVs and hybrids.

It's important to get the facts about EVs -- that's why Suncoast Sierra Club is showing “Revenge of the Electric Car”, the new film from the director of “Who Killed the Electric Car?” It chronicles the global resurgence of EVs and follows the exciting story of four men racing to bring them to the general public.

Big Oil's grip on the car industry has led to disastrous consequences. While the threat of offshore drilling continues to hang over America’s Best Beaches here on the Suncoast like a specter, oil contributes more to global climate disruption than any other fuel -- and gasoline-powered vehicles are a major reason why. They also create smog and other forms of air pollution, leading to health problems like asthma and COPD.

Many Americans, especially here in Tampa Bay, have little choice but to drive, which is why a switch to EVs is a key part of the path toward reducing our emissions and our addiction to oil. Even with today's electricity sources, EVs are significantly cleaner than nearly all conventional vehicles -- and will only get cleaner as we shift to cleaner sources of power.

Electric vehicles are one key step towards breaking Big Oil’s grip on our economy and in cleaning up a major source of air pollution. Come see “Revenge of the Electric Car” and learn how to get your revenge on Big Oil! Sierra Club’s Florida Healthy Air Campaign will be on hand with examples of EV’s that you can buy or lease for local dealers, and easy tips for finding where to charge them all over the Suncoast.  But why wait? Rent an ALL-ELECTRIC Nissan Leaf today from Enterprise Rent-A-Car @ 3400 5th Ave. S. in St. Petersburg and see what all the excitement’s about.

P.S. Want to move beyond your personal dependence on oil in another way that might be more affordable than buying an EV? June 18-22 is Dump the Pump Week, a time when PSTA joins transit agencies all over America in encouraging you to try taking the bus instead of driving your car. Sierra Club is partnering with PSTA to encourage you to burn less oil, save money, and arrive more relaxed than you thought possible. Watch www.psta.net and http://florida.sierraclub.org/suncoast/suncoast.html for news about this special week when you can learn how to move beyond oil in 2 great ways!
