The Studio@620 Announces its “Golden Ticket” Theatre Series: An Inaugural Subscription-Based Theatre Season for 2010-2011
The Studio@620 has announced its first full subscription-based season of theatre, their Golden Ticket Series. The seven play series will include two world premieres, the Tampa Bay-area’s triumphant return of LANGSTON HUGHES' BLACK NATIVITY at the Palladium and the tenth anniversary remount of the award-winning UNCLE BENDS, A HOME-COOKED NEGRO NARRATIVE.
This season, The Studio@620 will also be producing the world premiere of Christian Couture’s new comedy, THE MEN; local playwright Heather Jones’ historical drama, MURDER BALLAD; and Mark Leib’s romantic comedy, AMERICAN DUET, performed in repertory with the world premiere of Stephen Riordan’s SEVEN DEADLY PLAYS.
“We are so excited about our first official season of theatre at The Studio@620,” said Bob Devin Jones, artistic director of The Studio@620. “Being a theatre performer, director and playwright, it only makes sense for us to produce a full season of theatre that will keep Tampa Bay-area audiences on the edge of their seats.”
Tampa Bay Theatre-goers are encouraged to purchase a season subscription which will secure their place at each play for a reduced ticket price. (Package subscription rates will save up to $48 per person when compared to purchasing individual tickets for each performance.)

BLACK NATIVITY by Langston Hughes

Combining Langston Hughes’ poetry with the gospel music of today, BLACK NATIVITY touches a special chord in the hearts of all. It’s a celebration that tells the original story of the Nativity in scripture, verse, music and dance. A St. Petersburg Holiday fixture for many years, it is considered the African-American community’s Christmas gift to the world.
THE MEN by Christian Couture - The World Premiere Comedy!

Finding inspiration from THE WOMEN, Claire Boothe Luce’s classic comedy, THE MEN tells the story of a group of modern gay men in Manhattan, and what happens when one of them has to deal with the infidelity of his partner and the gossip that follows. MURDER BALLAD tells the story of men and women in Knoxville, TN, one year after the end of the Civil War, as they struggle to accept the tragedies they experienced during the war, and embrace love and life. Eastern TN, like most of Appalachia, was split during the war, friend fighting friend and brother fighting brother, causing pain and hostility that didn’t end with the war. Based on the stories in traditional American murder ballads, the play is a tense, spooky, heartbreaking and hopeful look at how war affects community. Directed by Christopher Rutherford.

An exciting play by noted playwright, professor and theatre critic Mark E. Leib, AMERICAN DUET follows Charlie and Jessica from their first date in 1970 to a momentous rendezvous in 2001. Over these 30 years, there are marriages and divorces, shared projects, angry fallings-out and lots of politics. Jessica, a student radical, remains a revolutionary all her life, just as Charlie becomes increasingly conservative. Even with their differences, their long friendship - and sometimes love - can't be broken. Some of the milestones along the way include: Vietnam, feminism, the Carter Campaign, the Reagan landslide, the fall of communism and September 11. The story of their ups and downs over the years will speak to anyone who has felt just how stunning developments over the last four decades have been.

Join prolific playwright and actor Bob Devin Jones as he cooks up a batch of beans and rice for audiences while telling the highly original stories of a railroad cook, a quilt-making grandmother, a shoeshine boy, a Bible-thumping preacher and a slave woman. UNCLE BENDS is both entertaining and slyly political in its exploration of the legacy of those people who are sometimes characterized as sell-outs, and debates about how to deal with one's racial identity.

Ariel Dorfman’s DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, winner of the Sir Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play of the London Season in 1992 will be A Simple Theatre Company’s inaugural production. Set in an unnamed country that is, like the author's native Chile, emerging from a totalitarian dictatorship, the play explores the after effects of repression on hearts and souls. This white-knuckle thriller is a riveting intellectual and emotional tug of war.
