Edge: The Story of Sylvia Plath

A one woman show by Paul Alexander

The Studio@620 is pleased to announce that it will be presenting the Tampa Bay Premiere of Paul Alexander’s play Edge, a one-woman show starring Marcy J. Savastano as poet Sylvia Plath.  Edge is being produced by twenty@620 and Method Machine Productions, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the St. Petersburg-based Christian Recovery Centers, Inc.

Edge is set on the last day of the poet Sylvia Plath’s life, in her kitchen, and reflects on her childhood, her husband-poet Ted Hughes, and her work.Plath takes account of her actions as well as the actions of others and uses them to fuel her tragic flaw: passion.  The prolific writer took her life on a cold February day in 1963, after being abandoned by the greatest thing and the worst thing that ever happened to her: her husband.  The play examines the events that led up to her turning on that gas stove and passing into a sleep from which she would never wake.

The play has been presented over 400 times across the globe, including performances in New York, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New Zealand, and Australia—but never in Tampa Bay.  Critics call Edge “troubling and powerful” (The New Yorker), “boldly dramatic and entertaining” (The Los Angeles Times), while the New York Times praises “a resurrected Plath…the showcase of a lifetime.”

This production reunites Marcy J. Savastano with director David Henderson.  Both are founding members of the Rochester-based performance company Method Machine, which presented an acclaimed production of Edge in March 2009.  The Rochester City Times writes, “[Savastano’s] performance is an acting tour de force; a nearly two-hour soliloquy that truly showcases her considerable abilities as an actress. And she is riveting.”

Twenty@620 is the Studio@620’s group of young theatre artists.  Past productions by Twenty@620 include Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party (with the Palladium Theater, 2006) and the highly successful cabaret-style revue The Girlie Show (2007 and 2008).
