The Florida Highwaymen: Even Further Down the Road
An exhibition of paintings featuring Florida's wetlands

The Florida Highwaymen

A Florida Highwaymen Painting

Program Overview

Thanks to the wonderful success of the Highwaymen exhibition last year we are proud to present a second presentation of their work. There will be 50 plus paintings on display. Many of the paintings have not been seen before in St. Petersburg. All of the paintings are for sale during the exhibition. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to purchase a painting for your home or business.

Florida Wetlands, The Highwaymens Legacy

Even Further Down the Road - The Florida Highwaymen Exhibition, takes as it's theme; "Florida Wetlands, The Highwaymens Legacy."  In recognition of the unique focus of the Florida Hightwaymen on our wetlands as the principal subject of their paintings this exhibition recognizes the fact that our wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate. Virtually all of the Highwaymen paintings contain a view of wetlands with birds, with sunsets or sun rises reflected in dazzling colors in the surface of the waters. These images are scenes of Florida that become more rare with each year.

We have assembled partnerships with organizations that are involved in the protection of the wetlands and the education of the public to the dangers of lost wetlands.  These subjects play a key role in the events we have scheduled during this exhibition.

There will be three Florida Highway paintings displayed at the Pier Aquarium in St. Petersburg. Please be sure to visit the aquarium to see the paintings and to learn more about the complexities and beauty of our Florida Wetlands.

About the Artists

The Highwaymen is the name given to a group of young African American artists who came together in the late 1950's in the area of Fort Pierce, Florida. They were and are painters of the Florida landscape.  Identifying themselves as 'Colorists', they painted the real and the imagined landscapes of Florida with colors and forms that captured the raw energy of the land. Drawing on their own cultural heritage they abandoned the formal academic approach to representation and instead took from their own deep interior landscape a unique creative energy. They used this energy to construct a mythology of images that have the ability to touch everyone who sees them.
