The Studio@620 presents "They're Only Going To Steal Your Cars", an Ethnodrama by Charles Vanover, directed by Bob Devin Jones, featuring actress La'Kesha O'Neal on Monday January 27, 2014 at 7:30 PM. Admission is $15, $5 for students and seniors.
"They're Only Going To Steal Your Cars" is a unique one woman, verbatim play presented via brief dialogue voiced by the play's narrator, an accomplished African-American teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. She shares the advice the African American principal in her previous school gave her about the building's many special needs students.
“It’s one of those schools where, like, if your heart is not in it, your kids are going to feel it. And then, she also gets awesome teachers, but our principal knows how to make them go away! Like I did. I stayed there for two years, and it was just like, you have to believe in your kids. You know, you have to believe. But, if you don’t believe, and if you tell your teachers, ‘Don’t worry about it, because they are only going to steal your cars.’ Then.”
Playwright Charles Vanover worked in the Chicago Public Schools for eight years as a teacher librarian in high poverty, minority schools and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Vanover's plays have been performed as part of the juried program for the American Educational Research Association, CUNY's New Educator Conference, the Qualitative Interest Group at the University of Georgia, The International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry at the University of Illinois, and the Ethnography in Education Research Forum at the University of Pennsylvania. His plays have been performed at Arizona State University, the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Michigan.
