Unhappy Hour: In Observance of Equal Pay Day

Presented by Business & Professional Women/St. Petersburg-
Pinellas (BPW)

Business & Professional Women/St. Petersburg-Pinellas (BPW) will hold the group's annual "Unhappy Hour" on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, in recognition of Equal Pay Day. The public is invited to attend the event at The Studio@620 located at 620 1st Avenue South in St. Petersburg, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served; a cash bar will be available. There is no cost to attend and no RSVP is necessary.

Equal Pay Day, which this year falls on April 12, marks the day the average woman in the United States finally earns the same amount of pay that her male counterpart earned in the previous calendar year. According to statistics released in 2010 by the U.S. Census Bureau, women on average earn 77 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts. Therefore, if a man were paid $50,000 to perform his job from January 1 through December 31, 2010, it will take a woman in the same position, on average, from January 1, 2010, through April 12, 2011, to earn the same amount.

BPW/St Petersburg-Pinellas is the local chapter of Business and Professional Women (BPW)/FL, which is affiliated with the national BPW Foundation. Founded in 1919, BPW crosses generations, occupations and political parties. BPW's mission is to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information. BPW/St. Petersburg-Pinellas meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month at The 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House, 400 Beach Drive NE in St. Petersburg.
